Familiar Ruptures and Opportunities, 1967 and 2017

The 1967 war was a fundamental, damning failure for the Arab world. In the course of six short days, Israel expanded its jurisdiction across the Egyptian Sinai Peninsula and the Syrian Golan Heights, as well as the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. For nineteen years, Arab states had regarded Israel as a foreign colony established by the collusion of imperial powers. Amid the anti-colonial fervor that animated much of the global south at the time, these states refused to recognize Israel as a Jewish homeland. They demanded that Palestinian refugees be allowed to return and given the right to govern themselves as promised by Britain, the League of Nations Mandate system and ...

Challenging Knowledge Production in the British Academy: Who Can Speak on Palestine?

[Excerpt from

Earlier this month, a British university hosted a conference on the fiftieth anniversary of the Israeli occupation, one of many being organized this year. The conference sought to reflect on fifty years of the “longest standing military occupation in the world,” focusing on “its implications not just for Palestinians, but also for Israelis.” Although academic, the conference promised to include non-academic representation including activists.    In the lead up to the conference, the initial program of speakers changed, with a notable decrease in Palestinian speakers. Asking around our networks, it seemed that some of these people felt uncomfortable with ...

Media on Media Roundup (May 17)

[

This week’s Jadaliyya “Media on Media” roundup covers several important stories affecting the Middle East and North African mediascape. A ransomware cyberattack named #WannaCry, which initially affected European institutions, is allegedly spreading to the Middle East, with Saudi Arabia and the UAE named as the most vulnerable targets. As Iranian presidential elections near, conservative parties embrace social media platforms in their electoral campaigning and current President Rouhani looks to win a second four-year term, promising to target remaining US sanctions. According to Al Monitor, journalists in Gaza are facing an increased crackdown on their freedom of ...

The Palestinian Litmus Test

After three years of unprecedentedly open debate, the membership of the Modern Language Association’s (MLA) membership is finally voting on the Palestinian call to endorse a boycott of Israeli academic institutions. Voting continues through May. Unlike other organizations that have considered the issue, however, the MLA is not voting on whether or not to boycott. Instead, we are voting on a resolution (2017-1) that would commit the association not to endorse the boycott, even though a pro- boycott resolution—having been rejected by the Delegate Assembly in January—is no longer even on the table. To resolve not to endorse a non-existent resolution may seem a somewhat ...

"Born Again" in Deir Nidham: Against the Illegal Military Occupation, from a Black-American Prophetic Christian Perspective

[A checkpoint in the Israeli Barrier in the West Bank, near Abu Dis. Photo taken by Justin McIntosh, uploaded via Wikimedia Commons]

Tactics of Racial Supremacy We had just left Ofer Prison. My work as a scholar-activist, committed to Palestinian justice, placed me there. We had been journeying all day with two of our Israel-based colleagues who specialize in advocating justice within a profoundly unjust Israeli carceral system. The detention facility, which is at once a juvenile prison and a courthouse, was an incomparable spectacle. The courtyard, a “holding area” for families waiting to enter the “courtrooms” where their adolescents would be tried, was heavily surveiled. The hearings took place within trailers, the inside of which felt more like cluttered cages than courtrooms. And the ...

Israel, Palestine, and the Poetics of Genocide

[Image by Ed Stein. Source: Global Research.]

“Genocide” evokes crematoria, mountains of skulls, and mass graves. It is what the Nazis did to the Jews of Europe, what the Khmer Rouge did to fellow Cambodians, what Hutu nationalists did to Tutsis in Rwanda. The term, like the practices of death and social destruction to which it refers, is odious. Charging genocide is like ringing an alarm because, when this crime is occurring or when it has occurred, consequences for perpetrators should follow. Our approach is to trace the political history of the term “genocide” in law and jurisprudence, and compare some of the contexts in which the practices to which the term refers have occurred, and where accountability has ...

Bombast of Mass Slayer

My name is Mass Slayer. I live in bombs and bullets, in cannons and rockets. I live in the nucleus of you. I could be an army, a lone wolf, or a terrorist band. I need not toil, pay individual visits, like the everyday Reaper. I stun as many as I can, in one go, I stun them on a street, in a bar, in a temple, in the battlefield, in the comfort of their homes-- and you could be there. Nothing pleases me though more than being in the news, and nothing pleases the news more than my ...

When I Failed to Say Farewell to You…

It was winter and my Berlin nights were crowded with people yet full of loneliness. I don’t know what year it was. Maybe 2008. I was working as a journalist and producer for a German television station in Berlin.  My schedule used to vary from week to week. I would sometimes start early in the morning and other times late in the evening. I used to love the night shifts, they were more quiet and I had an excuse for not being able to sleep.  That night I decided, although it was not my habit, to ...

Multi-Campus Event: Three UC Schools Observe the 50th Anniversary of the 1967 War (28 April)

June 2017 will mark fifty years of the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem. The anniversary makes all too evident what activists and scholars have long noted: the Israeli military occupation is not temporary. It is a defining structure of the Israeli and Palestinian political landscape. Initiated by the centers for Middle East studies at UC Berkeley, UCLA, and UC Santa Barbara, separate panel discussions on all three campuses on Friday, April 28, 2017 form the core of ...
